Fix Search is Not Working in Windows 10

Search in Windows 10 is a great feature and a lot of us use it every day. After the updates the usual method to get into some specific application or setting is used to be changed, so search can become a powerful tool that helps you to find what you want within the OS.

But often users facing with a problem when the search in the Taskbar or settings is not working. In this article we will take a closer look on how to fix these issues.

Fixing Search Not Working in Taskbar

Before trying to use some advanced methods described below, we recommend you to give a chance to Windows 10 built-in search and indexing tool — this one will automatically check if all necessary services are working correct and adjust their settings in case of need.

The method described in the way that allows to use it on any of Windows 10 versions:

  1. Press Win + R, type in control and press Enter, you will get to Control Panel. Near View by select Category.

In case you will face with a message that some of the issues were fixed after the finish, but the search is still not working, then reboot your machine and check it again.

Delete and Rebuild index

The next method is to delete and rebuild index in Windows 10. But before performing the instructions, we recommend you to follow these steps:

  1. Press Win + R, type in and run services.msc.
  2. Make sure that Windows Search service status is Running. If not – double click on it, choose Startup type: Automatic, click on Apply and then run the service (this step can also fix the problem).

After the steps above is performed, follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to Control Panel (press Win + R, type in and run control).
  2. Go to Indexing Options.

  3. In new window click on Advanced, and then click on Rebuild in Troubleshooting section.

Wait until the process finishes (the search won’t be available for some time, it depends on the drive’s capacity and speed). So try to use search again after one or two hours.

Important! The next method helps to fix search is not working problem only for Settings, it won’t help you to fix it in Taskbar.

What to do if Search is not working in Settings on Windows 10?

There is a search field in Settings on Windows 10, which helps you to find the needed system setting. Sometimes, this Settings search field can also stop working, while the search at Taskbar keeps working fine.

The next method is most often working, try it by following the steps below:

  1. Open File Explorer and paste %LocalAppData%\Packages\windows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState path to the address field, after that press Enter.
  2. In case folder Indexed is exist in this folder, right click on it and choose Properties (if there is no such option — this method is not applicable on your machine).
  3. In new window in General tab click on Advanced.

  4. In next windows: in case Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties is disabled, you need to check it on and click ОK. If it’s already enabled, you need to check off it and press OK. After that you will get back to General tab, click on Advanced button once again and check on Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties again and click OK.

After adjusting wait for a few minutes while service will index contents and check if the search is working now.

Additional information

The information below can be very useful in case you are facing with search not working problem in Windows 10:

  • In case the search is not working only when you are searching for applications in Start, you need to try to delete subfolder with the name {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} in branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\ {ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}\TopViews using Registry editor (for 64-bit systems you need to make the same thing in branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explor‌er\FolderTypes\{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-000‌0-0000-000000000000} ), and then reboot your machine.
  • You can try to add a new user to Windows 10 and check if search is working for the new account.
  • In case previous method didn’t help – you can try to perform Windows 10 system files integrity check.
