Fix Windows 10 Automatically Waking Up from Sleep mode issue

A lot of users of Windows 10 devices are facing with issue, when the OS is automatically waking up from Sleep mode and this might happen at any period of the day. The issue when Windows 10 is automatically waking up can be due to a specific settings of device’s components.

How to disable mouse and keyboard to wake the computer?

Sometimes your Windows wakes up because of the hardware (like mouse or keyboard). You can move the mouse accidentally or press the key, and that will wake up your machine. But there is something you can do with that:

  1. Press Win + S. Type in search field Command prompt.
  2. Right click on it and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Run the following command:
     powercfg -devicequery wake_armed

  4. In the console you will see a list of devices that are able to wake up your machine. You can find devices with the same names in your Device Manager. Don’t close the window with console, it will be easier to find them on next steps.
  5. Press Win + R. Type in and run command devmgmt.msc.
  6. In Device Manager find one of the devices that was listed in Command prompt window. Right click on it and choose its Properties;

  7. Go to tab Power management and check off Allow this device to wake the computer. Press ОК;

  8. Repeat these steps for all devices that were listed in the Command prompt before.

How to disallow the network adapter to wake your Windows PC?

A lot of network adapters have functionality that allows it to wake the computer or even turn it off. You need to check if such features are enabled on your machine:

  1. Press Win + R. Type in and run devmgmt.msc;
  2. Expand Network adapters, a few can be installed;
  3. Right click on one of the adapters and choose Properties (depending on hardware model you can have different options and settings that wake your computer);

  4. Go to tab Power management and check off Allow this device to wake the computer. Press ОК;

  5. Go to Advanced tab. Find Wake on Magic Packet and Wake on Pattern Match in the Property list.
  6. Click on it and choose Disabled in the menu;

  7. Repeat the steps above for all needed devices.

Sometimes it’s needed to disable option Wake-on-LAN in BIOS. After performing the instructions above network adapter won’t be able to wake your computer.

Utilities or services in Windows 10 that can wake your computer

Besides the hardware, some of the built-in utilities or Windows 10 services can also wake your computer. There are some special wake timers within the system, they can be used to run device for performing some operations and can wake the machine too.

In order to find out which wake timers is installed at the moment, follow the instructions:

  1. Press Win + S. Type in and run Command Prompt.
  2. Right click on it and Run as administrator.
  3. Type in and run the following command:
     powercfg –waketimers
    powercfg wake timers 

You can disable specific timers by following the instructions below:

  1. Press Win + R. Type in and run command taskschd.msc.
  2. Find the needed task in Task Scheduler Library. Right click on it and choose Properties.

  3. Go to Conditions tab and check off Wake that computer to run this task. Now press ОК.

In case any timers are not activated, they can appear after some time and can cause machine awakening from sleep mode. That’s why it is recommended to fully disable them:

  1. Press Win + R. Type in and run command control powercfg.cpl;
  2. Click on Change plan settings that is located near preferred plans options;

  3. Press on Change advanced power settings;

  4. Expand Sleep, after that expand Allow wake timers;
