One of the new awesome features of Windows 10 Update service is an automatic search, downloading and updating the drivers for PC’s hardware. In most cases it’s pretty useful feature: the system installing the needed software and user can even don’t think about this. But sometimes Windows chooses incorrect drivers for your hardware and this cause a lot of different issues. There is no simple solution to this problem and there is no option for users to disable it. The tool is checking for a new versions of software and display them in the list. User have ability to check on the updates that is not needed to be installed and Windows Update service will ignore them.

The main disadvantage of the utility is that it’s impossible to disable updating of any drivers at all. Show or hide updates utility ignores only those versions of hardware, that were available at the moment. In case the newer version of software will appear in the Microsoft Update Catalog, it will be installed automatically. Now, follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to Microsoft website using link.
  2. Download utility by clicking on Download the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter package now and run the file.

How to disable automatic drivers update for a specific device?

The above method shows how to block drivers updating for any specific component of your PC. It’s important to notice that these rules will affect both OS and user: you won’t be able to update the drivers even manually. The main advantage of this method is that it blocks the update of any version of the drivers, not only the specific one. The main disadvantage – in case you would prefer to disable update for a big amount of components, it will take a lot of time to perform this.

How to find information about the devices?

At first, we need to find information about components of PC.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type in and run devmgmt.msc by clicking Enter.

  3. Find the needed device in the list. Right click on it and choose its Properties.

  4. Switch to Details tab and in drop list select Hardware Ids.
  5. Right click on any ID in the list, choose Select All, then click on Copy.

  6. Note all values from the list by saving them in txt file (you might need them later).

Now we need to disable driver’s installation for all chosen IDs.

Disabling drivers update by using Group Policy editor

This method can be performed in Windows 10 Pro and higher.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type in gpedit.msc and press Enter.

  4. Find setting Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device and double click on it.

  6. Paste the first ID that you copied earlier in the first field, then paste the second ID in the second field (it will appear after you set the first), and so on. After finish click on ОК, then Apply.

To revert the changes, you just need to set the value of parameter from Enabled to Not Configured.

How to disable automatic drivers update by using Registry editor

To disable drivers update, users of Windows 10 Home and Home SL can use Registry editor.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type in regedit and press Enter.
  3. Go to branch:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
  4. Right click on folder Windows and choose New -> Key.
  5. Give a name to new folder DeviceInstall.
  6. In the same way create new subfolder in DeviceInstall folder and give it a name Restrictions.
  7. In the same way create a subfolder DenyDeviceIDs in Restrictions folder.
  8. Right click in the right area of editor and choose New -> String Value.

  10. Double click on the created key and paste the ID copied before to a key Value data field.

  11. In the same way create keys 2, 3, 4… and set them an appropriate IDs.

To undo the changes, you just need to delete all created keys and folders.

How to disable automatic drivers update in Control Panel

It’s pretty old method to disable drivers update – you just need to check on appropriate option in the system settings, in Control Panel. It’s important to mention that this method is not 100% working.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type in control sysdm.cpl and press Enter.

How disable drivers update using Group Policy

This solution is applicable only on Windows 10 Pro and higher.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type in gpedit.msc and press Enter.
  3. Go to Computer configuration –> Administrative templates –> System –> Driver Installation.
  4. Double click on setting Turn off Windows Update device driver search prompt.

To undo the changes, switch the setting to Not configured.

How to disable automatic drivers update using Registry editor

These instruction is applicable on Windows 10 Home and Home SL.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type in regedit and press Enter.
  3. Go to branch:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching
  4. Double click on SearchOrderConfig key. If there is no such key, right click on the right area of editor and choose New -> DWORD (32-bit) value. Give a name to new key SearchOrderConfig.
  5. Change its value to and press ОК.

To undo all changes, delete the created key or change its value to 1.

How to disable searching for drivers by Windows Update service

This method shows how to disable searching for any device’s drivers. It’s important to mention that this method is only applicable on Windows 10 Anniversary Update (builds 14393 and higher).

This method is applicable for Windows 10 Pro and higher.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type in and run gpedit.msc.
  3. Go to Computer configuration –> Administrative templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Update.
  4. Find Do not include drivers with Windows Updates in the settings list and double click on it.

To undo all settings to default, set the value to Not Configured.

How to disable search for updates by using Registry editor?

This method is applicable only on Windows 10 Home and Home SL.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type in and run command regedit.
  3. Go to branch:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
  4. Right click on folder Windows and choose New -> Key.
  5. Give a name to new folder WindowsUpdate.
  6. Right click on the right part of editor and choose New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  8. Double click on it and set its value to 1 and click OK.

To undo the changes, you need to delete the created key or change its value to 0.
